What happened
Anthropic has expanded its Claude for Startups programme. The company announced the new terms on Tuesday during SF Tech Week, as reported by TechCrunch.
Qualifying companies get a free year of the Claude Team plan for up to five users. They also receive $1,000 in API credits. The offer includes access to the Claude Marketplace for building plug-ins and virtual office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team. Startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two are eligible to apply.
How the room's reading it
The move is being read as a direct play for developer loyalty. On X, founders and builders see it as Anthropic chasing the same early-stage ecosystem that OpenAI captured. The free credits are table stakes now — the real hook is the free year of the Team plan and direct access to Anthropic's own AI team. This isn't just about subsidising API calls; it's about embedding Claude into the workflows of new companies before they scale. The consensus among startup watchers is that this is a classic platform strategy, aiming to make Claude the default choice for the next cohort of AI-native products.
Sailfish's take
We've seen this play before from cloud providers. The credits are marketing — they're designed to get you in the door and burn quickly on experiments. The real value here isn't the free tokens, it's the virtual office hours. Direct access to the team that builds the models is a rare opportunity for an early-stage company. We'd advise any eligible startup to take the offer for that reason alone. Use the time to de-risk a core feature or get expert feedback on a specific implementation. But we wouldn't rewrite our roadmap around it. Stay portable, because the best model for your use case in a year might not be Claude.
